“The devil made me do it,” was a trademark line the comedian Flip Wilson used to catapult himself to fame in the 1970s. The saying was intended to be cute, after all, everybody knows the devil is just an imaginary character. Although Wilson was a funny man, this line served to diminish the true nature of man's most menacing adversary.
